Ligabue in concert at the Greek Theatre in Taormina 17 July 2012

Born in 1960, in Correggio, Reggio Emilia, Luciano Ligabue is one of the most loved musicians by the public and musical critic in Italy. Singer and Writer of his songs, after the immediate success of the first album called “Ligabue” (1990),  published 17 albums (live, soundtracks and greatest hits) consecrated to the success with songs who went inside th hearth of many generations. His live performances are sold out everywhere in Italy, and, in 2005 at the concert to Campovolo di Reggio Emilia, there were 180.000 people: the bigger pay concert in Europe.

Author of three books and two movies, very appreciated too, has two sons and lives in Correggio.

Benjamin Chase ”Ben“ Harper (Claremont October 28, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. Harper plays an eclectic mix of blues, folk, soul, reggae and rock music, and is known for his guitar-playing skills, vocals, live performances and activism. Harper’s fan base spans several continents. His albums have been commercially successful in North America, Europe and Oceania. Harper is a two-time Grammy Award winner as well, winning awards forBest Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, in 2005. In 2007 he worked with Jovanotti playing guitar in the song “Fango” of the album “Safari”

The Jonic Hotel Mazzarò di Taormina is  near to  the  cableway and just 50 metres from  availabe car parking .With ease the cableway or ‘funivia’ as it’s known locally connects Taormina’s beach resort to its historical centre. For more than 50 years, it has allowed tourists to enjoy  the traquility and unique view of staying near the sea  , without having to use  cars, buses or other transport to reach our beautiful beaches..  In just 2 minutes one can reach the centre of Taormina, arriving directly in the vicinity of the Greek theatre (near  the arch of Porta Messina) where during the summer season numerous concerts take place organised by  Taormina Arte , with famous musicians from all over the world.  In the last 50 years the cable car has had many improvements and changes to guarantee safety and comfort. Today the cable car is monocable with a permanent link that carries two clusters of 4 cabins which equates to 680 people an hour. The cable car is open all year and operates every 15 minutes with an increase in service during the busy summer season.

In every trip the cabin capacity  is 12 people therefore transporting 48 people in a single journey. The cableway are coordinated so that each time 4 cabins ascend, 4 descend contemporarily. The average number of passengers reported per year is around 850,000.

Hotel Jonic Taormina

We stayed at the Jonic Hotel Mazzaro for 2 nights 18-20 October. I simply cannot find fault with this property--my husband and I loved it. I struggled for days with the decision to stay actually in Taormina proper or choose one of the areas with immediate beach access (read that as "good views, close to the water"), and I am happy that I chose well for us!

We arrived after dark, unfortunately, but the hotel was still very easy to find. While not late into the evening (it was only about 7:30pm), we blame the arrival (about 1.5 hours later than we anticipated) on our GPS, which INSISTED on sending us directly through the center of every small town within 50km on the way to Mazzaro/Taormina. Had to re-program the thing, so that was our own fault.

Signora Mariella greeted us on check-in and was kind, cheerful, friendly, and professional. Throughout our stay she gave us local information, advice on taking a boat tour of the Bay of Taormina, and was just a sweetheart all the way around. She also let us know that we had been upgraded from our reserved balcony room to a terrace room on the 4th floor.

The room was spacious with plenty of storage and a comfortable bed, the bathroom probably the largest of any we have enjoyed anywhere in Italy (with excellent water pressure and even temperature in the shower, plenty of storage space, a hair dryer and a magnifying mirror for shaving, etc.). The terrace (maybe 10 x 10) was awesome with a small table and chairs, plus 2 additional chairs for sunning yourself. Although this was a streetfront room we had exceedingly little traffic noise--probably the result of being on the 4th floor and the combination of the glass door plus the wooden shutters closing off the terrace. And the drapes/door/shutters combination also kept the room dark and made it very easy to sleep well past sunrise.
