Developed at the foot of Monte Pellegrino , Palermo owes its name to the sea that wets the city in fact is called " Panormos " that means port. One of the largest city square is Piazza Marina, near the sea but more distant from the most famous monuments . In the Middle Ages it was used for tournaments of chivalry, theatrical performances , markets and public executions. On the occasions of public royal wedding exhibitions were organized and impressive large wooden theaters , like the marriage of Charles II with Maria Luisa of Bourbon in 1680. Another very important place for the city is Piazza della Vittoria. In the seventeenth century the square was the scene of festivities and games. It has been transformed into a public garden in the early twentieth century, it is surrounded by some of the most interesting monuments of the city, as the new port and Mannerist palaces and Sciafani Arcicescovile
